My design for this play was part of a project for my San Diego State University Fall 2013 THEA-548 Sound Design for the Theatre class taught by Craig Wolf and Peter Nordyke.
This is one of William Shakespeare's best known and often produced plays. The Tempest is a story about love, freedom, friendship, and forgiveness, with a splash of magic. The story begins with a violent storm that shipwrecks a group of characters on Prospero's island. A number of adventures, plots, and troubles follow.
My approach to this design began with the premise that it is not a realistic play. With its magical creatures, a magic spirit changing the weather, and the plot itself--the design required a play on reality. But, despite the extent of magical or otherworldly thinking in the play, my goal was to keep the sound design within reason and reflect the plot and stage action.
